China virus outbreak effects on freight connections

The Chinese government decided to extend the lunar new year holidays to contain the corona virus outbreak. In some cities, for example in Shanghai, Ningbo and Guangzhou the holiday period has been extended until 10 February. Wuhan remains largely in isolation

Many airlines including British Airways, Lufthansa and SAS have discontinued their operations to mainland China at least for a few days. For the time being, Finnair has cancelled flights to Beijing Daxiang and Nanjing but continues operating on other routings. According to the latest information Finnair will not accept export cargo because domestic deliveries in China cannot be guaranteed. However, they still take import bookings from Shanghai to Helsinki.

Shipping lines have not given definite schedule changes so far but the measures to control the virus outbreak will most probably result in delays because many factories, warehouses and offices remain closed.
In rail transport, changes are expected to February and March schedules in both directions.

It may be challenging for importers and exporters to reach agents and suppliers in China. Ensign Freight, Varova’s partner in China and Hong Kong, will follow the situation in a day-to-day basis and provide further updates when possible.
