Coronavirus effects on freight – update 26 March 2020

As in many countries of the world, the coronavirus crisis has forced authorities in Finland to limit the movement of people both across and with national borders. Freight continues to move to and from most countries and areas, even if delays and schedule changes cannot be avoided.

Collections and deliveries in Finland

The Finnish government has announced that traffic limitations will be imposed between Uusimaa, the most populated are in Finland, and the rest of the country. The restrictions mainly apply to unnecessary passenger traffic. Freight shipments will continue but traffic may slow down due to motorway lane closures and stops at control points.

Ports and terminals are currently operating for freight services.

Consignees that receive import shipments in Finland can sign the waybills electronically to avoid physical contacts. In case of reservations or deviations regarding deliveries Varova’s contact persons must be notified without delay.

Road transport in Europe

It is still possible to carry freight shipments between Finland and Europe, including shipments to and from the hardest hit southern European countries of Italy, Spain and France. However, delays are to be expected to normal pick-up and delivery times, as well as to transit times.

Ferry traffic between Continental Europe and Finland is in operation. In addition, the Finnish authorities have guaranteed sufficient connections for ferry traffic between Finland, Sweden and the Baltic countries.

Air freight

Global capacities for airfreight are still at a low level, and price and possibility for each shipment should be checked case-by-case.

Ocean freight and rail transport from China

Production and logistics in China have partly returned to normal operations. Due to the global coronavirus situation there may be changes to freight schedules and capacities.

Train connections between China and Finland are in operation for both directions.

Global ocean freight

The authorities in India have imposed a major, countrywide lockdown which will also affect shipping. Several other countries have imposed various local restrictions.
