A significant portion road freight and ocean freight to and from Helsinki passes through Vuosaari Harbour, where our terminals are located. Renovation work on the tunnel leading to the port began in August 2025.
At the end of August, one lane of Vuosaaren satamatie was closed from the Seilorinkatu roundabout toward the tunnel, meaning traffic from the port to Ring Road III now runs on a single lane. The ramp from Satamakaari is completely out of use, and traffic heading from Vuosaari to ring road Kehä III is redirected via the Rahtarinkatu–Seilorinkatu–Vuosaaren Satamatie route.
However, traffic from ring road Kehä III toward the port flows as usual until the end of the year, and the tunnel remains open as usual. At this early stage of construction, no major disruptions to freight traffic are expected.
Vuosaari harbour tunnel to close in January 2026
The Vuosaari harbour tunnel is scheduled to close completely on January 6, 2026, due to renovation works. The upgrades will include improvements to fire safety systems, cameras, and lighting. The extensive renovation is expected to take approximately one year.
The increased traffic volume is likely to cause congestion at the junctions of Kehä III, as well as in the areas around Itäväylä and Kallvikintie. During morning and afternoon rush hours, slow-moving queues may form as heavy freight traffic shares routes with passenger vehicles.
We will send a publish an update on the closures and alternative routings at the end of the year.
