Kiel canal closure affects sea freight to Finland

Traffic in the Kiel Canal is at a standstill due to an oil spill at the port of Brunsbüttel. According to authorities, the canal will reopen to vessels on January 3, 2023 at the earliest.

The closure mainly affects container transportation to and from Finland, a large part of which goes through the Kiel Canal. Feeder ships operating between European sea ports and the Baltic Sea are directed to go around Denmark, which increases the travel time.
