Strike at the ports in Finland – situation 27 February

The collective agreement negotiations between the port operators and AKT, the Finnish Transport Workers Union, did not reach a solution, and the strike began on February 15, 2023, at 06:00.

The strike applies to all ports in Finland. The effects of the strike on international transport are considerable.

Container freight

During the strike, container ships will not be loaded or unloaded in the ports. Similarly, both the collections and deliveries of cargo containers and empty containers to ports will be suspended.

Varova can seek alternative routes for transport by air. We can offer air freight through our comprehensive network.

Road freight

Only those trucks that are accompanied with a driver can be unloaded or loaded on ferries that link Finland with Continental Europe. Such units can be placed to ships without the labor input of stevedores. The capacity of these units is limited, so exact schedules cannot be guaranteed.

These special arrangements cause additional costs. More information will be provided by your sales contact persons.

*Situation update on 22 February

The strike continues. The parties will next negotiate on Thursday, February 23, 2023 in the afternoon.

We monitor the situation closely and hope for a quick agreement between the parties.
